Neuro Linguistic Programming "NLP"

Neuro Lingustic Programming or NLP is an extremely useful tool for reprogramming your mind. It was first developed by Richard Bandler and John Grindler in the early 1970's. Their first book on the subject is entitled The Structure of Magic- A Book About Language and Therapy.

In short, NLP allows you to reprogram your mind by altering the sensory perceptions (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste) of experience. There are many different ways to use this tool. In the simplest terms, you may alter your relationship with an experience (real or imagined) by deliberately altering the visuals (color, brightness, size, perspective, etc.), sounds (volume, intensity, clarity, etc.), character and other sensory perceptions of that experience.

For example, I recently broke my leg while windsurfing. Every time I remembered the experience, I felt a pit in my stomach and a great sense of unease. I chose to have a different relationship with this experience and decided to use NLP to reprogram my mind. This is how I went about reprogramming my mind.

Step 1- I created a safe physical and emotional environment in which to re-tool my experience.

Step 2- I allowed myself to recall the experience in vivid detail- full color, sound and other sensations.

I saw myself on my windsurfing board in full rich color with bright light and a panoramic 3-dimensioanl landscape. I heard the wind howling, the waves splashing and the sound of the water moving underneath my board. I felt the texture of the board underneath my feet, the wind whipping my hair around and the water surging over my ankles. I allowed myself to feel the huge gust hit me, watched the boom fly out of my hands, felt myself land on the sail and saw my ankle bend backwards in slow motion with a high level of detail. (You get the idea.)

Step 3- I then re-played the experience and made it comical.

I saw the cartoon-like characters from South Park standing on the edge of my board. (I had just seen my first episode of this television program the night before. It revolved around the use of the expletive "sh _ t".) As I recalled my ankle bending backwards, one character said sh _ t. Another said, that must hurt like sh_t. The third said, "What a sh_tty thing to do.". It went on from there becoming more and more ridiculous until I was actually laughing out loud.

Step 4- Finally, I diminished the sensory perceptions until the entire experience faded into nonexistence.

I saw the characters begin to fade from full color to black and white and from 3-dimensions to flatness. I heard their voices diminish in volume and intensity. I then saw them fade completely from existence. I saw the color of the scene (water, sky, landscape and board) fade from color to black and white. I saw the scene become faded and indistinct. I heard the dull roar of the wind and water become silent. The whole scene became flat and then simply faded from existence.

Step 5- I checked my feelings on the incident.

After replaying the incident once more, I found that I had no sensation of discomfort or unease. I could discuss it readily with no ill feeling.
